My Approach

Teaching Adults

My teaching style is structured, but relaxed with a focus on fun & enjoyment. My aim is to ensure that with each lesson you make real progress, as they will be tailored to your goals and where possible use the style of music that excites you.

I try to emphasise the practical side of playing. Music theory is important, and is taught, but I find that beginners particularly need time to overcome the physical aspects of learning the guitar first, in order to really bond with the instrument.

Lessons take place in my fully equipped studio or in your own home, subject to an addition charge for reasonable petrol costs.

During your first lesson we would typically agree what you want to achieve with your guitar. Do you wish to strum songs from a songbook for your own enjoyment, become good enough to play in a band, or improvise solos? Once this is established I will be able create a tailored lesson plan, complete with handouts and backtracks to enable to to practice effectively at home.

I also have the facility to record elements of your lesson either by audio/video for your own reference.

As you progress I will use the Registry of Guitar Tutors guitar examination grades 1-8 to underpin your development as I believe it offers the best all-round structure for you to develop your guitar skills.

Being a gigging guitarist I also offer advice and tips in the following areas:

  • Live performance

  • Gear set-up / use of effects, signal chain placement

  • Guitar repair/maintenance

Teaching Children

As a parent myself I know the importance of keeping children interested and motivated. I make lessons practical & enjoyable by using tunes that they will recognise, as well as introducing them to other styles of guitar music.

It is important for you to know how your child is progressing. As well as giving you a verbal update after each lesson, I also provide a quarterly written report. For a small additional charge I can also provide an audio file of your childs performance during the lesson.

As a general rule I would suggest that lessons are best suited to children over the age of eight.

I am fully CRB checked.
